Mandi, June 30
Various women organisations of the state have criticised the police action against protesters at Kaza in Lahaul and Spiti district — these women had held a protest march against Lahaul and Spiti MLA and Agriculture Minister Ram Lal Markanda at Kaza on June 9 for violating the norms of the locally-imposed lockdown.
Ratan Manjari, president of Mahila Kalyan Parishad Kinnaur, Niramal Ekal Nari Shakti Organisation HP and other 18 organisations had criticised the police for registering cases against 190 women of the Spiti valley. The representatives of the 20 organisations said that they supported the stance of these tribal women, who had asked Markanda to follow the restrictions imposed locally to check the spread of the virus.
They alleged that Markanda had pressured the Kaza administration to book the women protesters. They urged the state government to direct the police to withdraw the cases registered against the women protesters in Kaza police station or they would approach the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.
