With introduction of 65 lakh seeds, Pong reservoir set to boost fish production
In an effort to enhance fish production and improve fishermen’s incomes, the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department has introduced 65 lakh fish seeds into the Pong Reservoir, also known as Maharana Pratap Sagar. The reservoir, spread over 24,000 hectares, supports the livelihood of 3,338 fishermen from 15 registered cooperative societies.
Fisheries Department Director Vivek Chandel stated that seeds of Katla, Rohu, Mori, and Grass Carp species, each exceeding 70 mm in size, were used. The distribution included 30 lakh Katla seeds, 20 lakh Rohu seeds, 5 lakh Mori seeds, and 10 lakh Grass Carp seeds. Key locations like Sihal, Mazhar, Dadasiba and Jambal were chosen for the process, with supervision from the department, local fisheries’ cooperative societies, and public representatives.
As of November 15 this year, the reservoir has produced 2,32,440 kg of fish, valued at approximately Rs 4.72 crore in the market. The Fisheries Cooperative Sabha Nandpur reported the highest fish price at Rs 311 per kg, underscoring the reservoir’s unique standing as the country’s most lucrative fishing zone.
Director Chandel emphasised the department’s commitment to achieving a production target of 340 tonnes by March next year. Last year, 330 tonnes were recorded in the corresponding period. He appealed to fishermen to safeguard the stocked fish seeds to ensure sustainable fish supply and future economic benefits.
The initiative not only boosts production but also provides a significant income source for local fishermen, with prices steadily increasing annually. The programme reflects a strategic approach to maximise the reservoir’s potential while preserving its aquatic resources.
