Uzbekistan handicrafts shine at Kullu Dasehra festival
This year’s Kullu Dasehra festival has seen a surge of interest in the handicraft stall run by artisans from Uzbekistan, delighting visitors with handmade products such as dolls, mufflers, stoles and shawls. Ivik, a trader from Uzbekistan, expressed his pleasure at visiting Kullu, noting that business was thriving. The international presence adds to the festive trade fair, where businesses generate significant profits during the seven-day celebration, running from October 13 to November 8.
The Dasehra fair offers a wide range of affordable goods, drawing both local residents and visitors from afar. Jackets, woolens, quilts and blankets are particularly popular, as people take advantage of the reasonable prices. Hosiery and shoe markets are also crowd favourites, while essential household items, such as utensils, are commonly purchased. Many locals time their purchases to the festival, which conveniently follows the apple season.
Domestic and international visitors flock to the market for its traditional handloom and handicraft offerings. The festival’s economic impact extends to a wide range of traders, benefiting both local businesses and visiting artisans. The Kullu Dasehra Festival Committee also profits from these activities. The market is a melting pot, attracting people from Lahaul, Spiti, and beyond.
