Unearthing evolution: Fossils spark curiosity among students

Evolution and Beyond theme was aptly captured at an event held at Tethys Fossil Museum near Dharampur, captivating young minds with a timeless journey highlighted through fossils. The event brought together avid students and expert speakers, offering insights into various scientific topics.

Dr Ritesh Arya, a Guinness World Records holder and the Director of Tethys Fossil Museum, introduced the fascinating subject of evolution based on an impressive collection of more than 500 fossil specimens from different parts of the Himalayas. The fossils, meticulously curated, served as tangible evidence of the earth’s historical narrative.

Over 25 students from various schools participated while engaging with the specimens that encapsulated millions of years of biodiversity. The informative session of Dr Arya’s session satiated the curiosity of the eager young minds while providing a rare glimpse into the earth’’s evolutionary past and sparking their interest in paleontology.

Adding to the intellectual buoyancy of the day, Professor Sanjiv Dhingra, a renowned scientist and Director of Canada Italy Tissue Engineering Programme, Winnipeg, Canada, captivated the audience with his discussion on the advancements in stem cell research. His session illuminated the potential of stem cells in regenerative medicine, medical innovations, emphasising their future applications in treating illnesses.

Students and educators alike were fascinated at how future medical therapies could be revolutionised by these tiny yet powerful cell mechanisms. Dr Dhingra said that new technology is addressing the challenges of personalised medicine with precision and safety.
