Doctors at the Una Regional Veterinary Hospital on Tuesday surgically removed nine polythene bags and a steel wire from the stomach of a buffalo.

Sharma Animal Husbandry Department, Una, Deputy Director Dr Vinay Kumar said this was the 40th case of Diaphragmatic hernia treated surgically at the hospital.

Veterinary experts said, in this type of hernia, the thin diaphragm — which separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity — gets ruptured, creating a hole that allows abdominal organs to enter into the chest cavity.”

The Deputy Director said Dr Nishant Ranaut, Dr Shilpa Gupta and Dr Nikita Chaudhary assisted him during the surgery.

He noted that the hospital was equipped with facilities like X-ray and ultrasound machines, besides blood and milk testing labs. He said the condition of the buffalo was stable, and it had been handed over to the owner.
