Una DC puts curbs on hiring migrant labourers in district

The Deputy Commissioner of Una, Jatin Lal, has issued an emergency order mandating police verification for migrant labourers working in the district. The measure aims to enhance public safety and prevent crime by ensuring that contractors and employers do not hire migrant labour without proper identification.

According to the order, a significant number of individuals are visiting Una district for employment in trades and services, such as shawl vending, cobbling and utensil repair. Many of these workers and service providers operate without their backgrounds being checked, complicating crime prevention efforts. The Deputy Commissioner warned that this could lead to breaches of peace, threats to human life and damage to public property if not addressed.

In response, the Deputy Commissioner, who also serves as District Magistrate, has ordered that no contractor, employer or trader may engage migrant labourers for informal or contract work unless the laborers first provide their personal details, including a passport-sized photograph, to the local police for verification.

Additionally, the order states that any individual visiting Una district for self-employment or informal job opportunities must inform the SHO of their intent. Religious institutions and other establishments accommodating these individuals must also maintain records and ensure registration with the police before allowing anyone to stay.

The local police have been instructed to closely monitor the activities of these workers, and any violation of this order could result in penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
