Two-day disability awareness workshop held at Dehri college
The committee for the welfare of disabled students (enabling unit) of Government College, Dehri, in Fatehpur the sub-division of Kangra district recently organised a two-day disability awareness workshop, which witnessed the participation of 75 students.
Addressing the participants at the programme, Fatehpur Welfare Officer Anup Singh talked about the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act (2016), government schemes launched for disabled persons in the state, UDID cards, and their application process.
He said that the RPwD Act was a law that aimed to ensure the people with disabilities could live with dignity, equal opportunities and without discrimination.
“The act came into force on April 19, 2017, replacing the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995,” he said.
In the workshop, discussions included types of disabilities, benchmark disabilities, barriers, accessibility standards, rights, reservations, rehabilitation programmes, scholarships, and marriage grants for PwDs were discussed.
Officiating Principal Sapna Bakshi encouraged students to support their disabled peers, and highlighted the importance of disability awareness.
