A driver was killed after a truck loaded with cement veered off the road and plunged into 100-m gorge at Hadotha in Chamba district on Friday morning.

The truck was on its way from Pathankot to Chamba. The driver, identified as Chhindu (25), who was the only occupant of the vehicle, died on the spot. The local police said the truck went off the road and landed on a link road below.

On its way down, the truck struck a tree and broke it before crashing onto the road below. The truck was reduced to a mangled heap of metal due to the impact.

Area residents rushed to the spot on hearing a loud sound and informed the police. The police, with the help of locals, extricated the body and transported it to the Chamba Medical College. The body was handed over to the family after a post mortem.
