In Jogindernagar subdivision of Mandi district, a fourth death allegedly linked to a jaundice outbreak has been reported, heightening concerns among local residents. The deceased, identified as Rani Devi (36) from Simas panchayat, succumbed to the disease at the PGI, Chandigarh, last night.
Family members claim that Rani Devi, who initially sought treatment at a local hospital in Ladbhadol, was later diagnosed with jaundice at an Ayurvedic hospital in Paprola. Her condition worsened and she was referred first to Tanda medical college and then to the PGI, Chandigarh, where she passed away.
Anil Brar, up-pradhan of Simas panchayat, confirmed that the woman was diagnosed with jaundice.
However, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Mandi, Dr Narendra Bhardwaj, disputed these claims. He said that the official medical report indicated kidney failure as the cause of the death. He added that only two deaths due to jaundice had been officially recorded in the district so far.
Jogindernagar subdivision has been severely affected by the jaundice outbreak, with 241 cases reported and 67 still active.
