Smart meter installation survey begins in Sirmaur
The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board has started a survey to install smart meters across Sirmaur district, covering approximately 1.82 lakh domestic and commercial consumers. The survey is being conducted by TDC Management Consultant Private Limited and is currently underway in Nahan and other divisions.
Survey teams are facing challenges in some areas due to a lack of trust and cooperation from residents. The electricity board has appealed to the public to support the initiative, highlighting the long-term benefits of smart meters for both the board and consumers.
Smart meters are advanced electronic devices that record data on electricity consumption, voltage, current and power factor. They transmit this information to utility providers via wireless or wired networks, eliminating the need for manual meter reading.
These meters can detect tampering and immediately alert the electricity board, ensuring prompt action. They also allow remote disconnection of power in case of non-payment, saving the board the effort of sending personnel to the site.
The board states that smart meters improve grid monitoring, reduce billing errors and enable consumers to manage electricity usage effectively. They can integrate renewable energy sources, predict power outages, and help prevent them. Consumers will also receive daily updates on their energy usage through mobile notifications.
Unlike traditional meters, which require manual readings, smart meters send consumption data every 15 minutes or more frequently. This technology reduces inefficiencies while providing real-time data.
The survey has started in Nahan, Kala Amb, Dadahu and Bagthan, covering nearby rural areas. Consumers can contact the electricity board office for more information during working hours.
Darshan Singh, Superintendent Engineer of Nahan Circle, explained that 1.82 lakh domestic and commercial consumers in the district would transition to smart meters after the survey. He urged residents to cooperate with survey teams to ensure a smooth rollout.
The initiative is expected to enhance power distribution efficiency and provide consumers with greater control over their electricity usage. Residents are encouraged to support the survey process to facilitate the successful implementation of this advanced technology.
