Sissu leads the way: A mission to eliminate single-use plastics
The Panchayat Tourism Development Committee (PTDC), Sissu, has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by launching a mission to eliminate single-use plastics, starting with disposable plates.
Under the People-Owned and People-Governed Tourism (POPGT) project, supported by People for Himalayan Development (PHD) and Royal Enfield, PTDC has introduced eco-friendly plates made from Bauhinia vahlii leaves (locally known as taur ke patte), traditionally used in Himachali feasts (dham). This initiative not only curbs plastic waste but reconnects the community with its cultural roots, blending tradition with modern eco-tourism.
The initiative was officially inaugurated during a grand event graced by SDM-cum-DTDO Rajneesh Sharma, who praised the panchayat’s efforts. “This initiative exemplifies how communities can lead in environmental protection and heritage preservation,” he remarked, urging other regions to follow suit.
The helipad area of Sissu has been declared a plastic plate-free zone, marking the first milestone in the panchayat’s ambitious goal to achieve near-zero waste in the coming years. A PTDC representative emphasized: “This is not just about sustainability; it’s a promise to protect the Himalayas for future generations. Small, united actions can drive extraordinary change.”
Under the POPGT project, the focus extends beyond sustainability to include strengthening local livelihoods. Guidelines are being developed for homestay owners, emphasizing skill enhancement and visitor management. By collaborating with panchayats, self-help groups (SHGs), and women’s groups, the initiative aims to boost livelihoods and foster eco-friendly tourism practices. The first tourism development plans are being drafted in Koksar Panchayat, laying a blueprint for sustainable growth.
The success of the campaign is attributed to the collective efforts of PTDC Sissu, led by Pradhan Rajeev and Vice-Pradhan Sandeep Kingopa, alongside the support of PHD and local stakeholders. “This mission represents hope, responsibility, and perseverance, setting an inspiring example for others in the Himalayan region to adopt greener practices,” shared Rajeev. By combining tradition and innovation, Sissu is charting a sustainable path, ensuring the pristine beauty of the Himalayas is preserved for future generations.
