Shimla varsity advocates more inclusive workplaces
Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, on Tuesday marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities with focus on ‘Workplace Accessibility and Inclusion’. The Centre for Studies Related to Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the Debate, Drama and Literary Society under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Priti Saxena, organised the event.
The programme, held at Gaiety Theatre here, brought together a diverse group of individuals to celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities and to highlight the importance of inclusivity in all aspects of society.
The focus of the event was on the central theme of empowering persons with disabilities and advocating their active participation in societal activities.
Through a series of performances and activities, the event sought to promote a more inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities are not only accepted but actively engaged in the social, cultural and economic spheres of life.
A key highlight of the event was a street play performed by students, which poignantly addressed the critical issue of “Accessibility at the Workplace”. The play effectively conveyed the pressing need for accessible and inclusive workplaces, emphasising that ensuring physical accessibility was just the first step.
Equally important was the need for a cultural shift that fosters respect, equal treatment and integration of persons with disabilities into the workforce. The performance underlined the notion that accessibility was not merely about making adjustments to physical infrastructure, but also about creating an organisational culture that was sensitive to the needs of all employees.
This included accessible office layouts, communication aids, adaptive technologies, and, most importantly, a mindset change that valued diversity and ensured equitable opportunities for career advancement, professional development and meaningful participation. The event served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create workplaces and social environments that are truly accessible, welcoming and conducive to the growth and empowerment of all individuals, irrespective of their physical abilities.
