Shimla BJP MP calls for abolition of waqf board
Shimla BJP MP Suresh Kashyap has urged the Centre to abolish the waqf board, citing the “discriminatory nature of the act and the functioning of the board”.
He said the decision would be in line with the principle of “one nation, one law”, ensuring equality and justice for all citizens.
If the abolition was not possible immediately, the government should carry out comprehensive reforms in the functioning of the board by forming a neutral body and consolidation of the waqf properties under a secular, government-controlled trust, he added.
He said it was imperative to make regular audits and public disclosure mandatory of all waqf properties and financial transactions.
“From the perspective of legal reform, the Waqf Act should be amended to ensure that any property dispute is resolved through a regular judicial process, and not through a tribunal,” added Kashyap.
He said the powers of the waqf board should be defined up to tehsil level, and the appointments of waqf board officials should be done as per the government rules, not arbitrarily.
