Rs 24-crore project to tap tourism potential of Pong wetland

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hem Raj Bairwa said the project report, prepared by Voyants Solutions, a private consultancy firm, has been forwarded to the Union Tourism Ministry by the State Tourism Development Corporation.

As per the project’s first phase, key initiatives include the introduction of solar boats and the launch of an online tourism portal for the wetland. Despite being a world-renowned Ramsar Wetland Site, the Pong wetland has long suffered from neglect, with existing infrastructure lying unused due to poor maintenance.

Declared a wildlife sanctuary under the Indian Wildlife Act of 1972 in 1999, the Pong wetland attracts over one lakh exotic and local migratory birds every winter, making it an ideal destination for eco-tourism. Areas like Nagrota Surian, Fatehpur, Nangal Chowk and Mathiyal, which are part of the wetland, possess unique features that can be developed to further boost tourism.

Another major highlight of the wetland is Bathu-ki-Ladi, a cluster of 1,200-year-old temples that re-emerge annually in March when the water recedes. Known for its serene atmosphere and scenic beauty resembling a coastal beach, this site has gained popularity for pre-wedding photoshoots and bird-watching activities. However, the lack of tourism infrastructure has hindered its full potential.

The proposed Rs 24-crore project seeks to enhance eco-tourism facilities, preserve the wetland’s biodiversity and provide a world-class experience to visitors, while generating opportunities for local economic growth.

With the approval and implementation of this project, the Pong wetland is expected to emerge as a major tourist destination, attracting nature lovers, bird watchers and heritage enthusiasts alike.
