Role of social media expanding, need to protect freedom of press, says Dy CM
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri today said that the role of social media was fast expanding day by day but the freedom of the press should be protected at all cost. He emphasised the role of the media in preserving the ethics and principles of journalism. Agnihotri, while presiding over the state-level National Press Day function held here, underlined how emerging technologies had significantly transformed the landscape of journalism.
He said, “In an era dominated by social media, journalists face unprecedented challenges and have a greater responsibility to disseminate accurate and reliable information to the public. The image of a newspaper or a journal and the stature of a journalist among readers was due to the credibility of the news content.”
Agnihotri said that truth, objectivity, transparency and impartiality were expected in journalism and “the media has the responsibility to present important social events, information related to the work of the government and other information to society on the basis of truth and facts”.
On the theme ‘Changing Nature of Press’, he said that the impact of digitalisation could be clearly seen in the field of journalism, particularly in the past two decades. , he added.
A former journalist himself, the Deputy Chief Minister narrated his experiences and the challenges the mediapersons faced in that era. “These days most journalists depend on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Google services, which won’t make them true professionals,” he claimed.
