Rising communal tensions in Shimla, CITU demands disciplinary action against Minister

In a meeting here today, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) voiced strong concerns over the rise in communal tensions in Shimla. The meeting was presided over by the state president, Vijender Mahehra and key leaders, including the national secretary, Dr Kashmir Singh Thakur and the general secretary, Prem Gautam, were among the participants.

CITU officials criticised the statements made by the state government’s Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister. They claimed the statements fuelled communal discord. Dr Kashmir condemned the minister's previous remarks and demanded disciplinary action from the Chief Minister and Congress high command.

To address the situation, CITU plans to celebrate ‘Harmony Day’ on September 23 and launch an awareness campaign across Shimla and other districts on September 10. The organisation also announced protests, which would begin on September 11 against the closure of mini-Anganwadi centres for Anganwadi workers and other demands, which would continue until October 21.

Furthermore, CITU highlighted problems regarding the dismissal of midday meal workers due to school mergers and the inefficiencies in the State Labour Welfare Board concerning the registration and financial aid for construction and MGNREGA workers. A district-level protest would be organised on October 10 if there are no improvements. Additionally, a state-level convention for transport workers is scheduled for September 25 in Shimla.
