Solan, January 1

Unscheduled power cuts in Solan have become a cause for concern for residents as cold weather conditions make it difficult for them to sustain without heating gadgets.

The work has also been affected in the offices. Mukesh Gupta, president, Solan Beopar Mandal, said power cuts were creating hardships for residents as well as traders who were losing out on their business.

He said power officials should ensure that their infrastructure was well maintained so that the residents did not face difficulties in the harsh winters.

Since there was no shortage of power as the officials claim, the lack of proper repair and maintenance of the system appeared to be the underlying cause.

Superintending Engineer, SK Sen, said the use of heating gadgets in the cold weather put excess strain on the system and weak points gave way and each time such an eventuality occurred, it took at least 45 minutes to rectify the system.

He said power had been augmented for Solan with 6.30 mva substation at Kandaghat and another one of 6.30 mva at Subathu, both supply power to the town. He said there was adequate power to cater to the town but large-scale use of heating gadgets by students in paying guest accommodations was putting an excessive burden on the infrastructure.
