The Shimla police has decided to use the ABON DOA drug testing kit to identify substance users. With this kit, the police would be able to identify whether a person has consumed any type of drug recently.

For this, the police would only need to test the saliva of the person. Shimla Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said the kit worked excellently.

Besides identifying victims of addiction, the police would also be able to get leads for nabbing drug peddlers, and, eventually, kingpins, he added.

The SP said it was necessary to identify victims of addiction, especially youngsters, as they could persuade people around them to consume drugs. “Upon finding out that youngsters had been being under the influence of drugs, the police will inform their parents and guardians about this, and will also suggest them to get the user treated,” he added.

He said Shimla police was making efforts to eradicate the drug menace under Mission Clean. “To curb the drug menace and bust interstate drug rackets within the district, we have opted for Social Integrated Intelligence System (SIINS), through which we have been able to bust major interstate drug rackets such as the Shahi Mahatma gang and the Radhe gang. We have also developed strong intelligence networks and have also developed a good network with taxis, bus and hotels operators. Now, with the drug testing kit, we will ensure than any suspicious person is identified immediately so that further action could be taken,” he added.

He said this initiative would also inculcate the fear of being tested amongst users, forcing them to refrain from consuming drugs.
