In an effort to foster social equality, the state government is aiming to transform the lives of marginalised communities such as Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), women, children, elderly and specially-abled people through a series of welfare programmes.

To support the growth and empowerment of specially-abled children, the government has introduced an initiative called ‘Aseem’. This scheme offers monthly scholarships between Rs 625 and Rs 5,000 to specially-abled students

As per a government spokesperson, central to these efforts is the expansion of social security pensions, which now benefit over eight lakh individuals across the state. “The government has recognised the unique challenges faced by widows, single women and those with disabilities. The eligibility criteria for the pension has been relaxed, due to which nearly 76,000 new beneficiaries are now under the ambit of social security pension scheme and availing pension benefits,” he said.

He further said that under the Swarn Jayanti Aashray Yojana, Rs 1.5 lakh per household is being offered to eligible SC, ST and OBC families to provide them with affordable housing. “In addition, the government has earmarked Rs 5 crore to equip SC/ST/OBC youth with digital skills through specialised computer training programmes and empowering them to thrive in the modern economy,” he said.

The spokesperson further said that inclusivity and social harmony was being reinforced with a programme under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Atrocities Prevention Act, 1989. It offers Rs 50,000 as an incentive for inter-caste marriages, promoting unity and mutual respect within society.

“The government has set up eleven old age homes, 22 daycare centres and seven senior citizen care centres across the state to ensure elderly citizens are taken care of. These homes provide not only a safe and supportive environment but also the daily care and companionship that older adults need,” he said.

Additionally, to promote inclusivity in society, incentives from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000 are provided to encourage marriage with specially-abled individuals. “The scheme also extends grant support to non-government organizations running institutions that care and support people with disabilities,” he said.
