Over 600 participate in first-ever Spiti marathon

The first-ever High Altitude Marathon in Spiti Valley, organised by the Army under Operation Sadbhavana, was held on September 28-29. The event saw enthusiastic participation from approximately 640 runners across four categories — 77-km Spiti Avenger Challenge; 42-km Spiti Full Marathon; 21-km Spiti Half Marathon; and 10-km Run for Fun — promoting local engagement and sustainable development in alignment with the Union Government’s Vibrant Village Programme.

Participants from across the country, including locals and distinguished athletes, competed in various events, showcasing the cultural richness of the region. The marathon aimed to boost tourism and create livelihood opportunities for the local population.

In the 77-km Spiti Avenger Challenge, Jigmet Namgyal from the district police emerged as the champion in the men’s category and Tenzin Dolma secured first place in the women’s category. In above 40 age group, Honorary Captain (retd) Suresh secured the first place. In the 42-km Spiti Full Marathon, the title went to Naik Het Ram, while Disket Dolma won in the women’s category.

In the half marathon of the men’s category, Testan Namgyal of Indian Army got first place and in the women’s category, Tashi Ladol claimed the title. Naib Subedar Shyam Singh and Rakhee Rai were the winners in the veteran category.

In the 10-km Run for Fun, Sonam Stanzin of the Army, while Sonam Zangpo won in the women’s category.

Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Surya Command, felicitated the winners and complimented all participants for their spirit and resilience and congratulated all finishers for conquering the mighty Himalayas.

Gaurav Schimar from the Snow Marathon Team remarked, “The Spiti marathon is a gift from the Indian Army to the nature and mountain-loving running community, and a tribute to the land and its inhabitants.” He emphasised that the marathon has now positioned Spiti among the world’s premier high-altitude long-distance running circuits.

Participants expressed their admiration for the Army’s efforts and the successful execution of the event, with many calling for it to become an annual tradition.
