Over 200 take part in pinkathon

Over 200 participated in the pinkathon organised by the Department of Radiation Oncology, Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), to commemorate October as ‘breast cancer awareness month’ with an aim to raise awareness and to support breast cancer patients.

The event was flagged off by Dr Manish Gupta, Professor and Head of the Cancer Hospital along with Dr Lalit Chanderkant, Dr Siddharth Vats and Dr Poornima Thakur. The walkathon that commenced from the new building of the Cancer Hospital passed through the Ridge, Chaura Maidan and the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Participants wore pink T-shirts symbolising solidarity in the fight against breast cancer.

Vipasha, a second year student from Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV), Shimla, stood first while Anamika, a student of Class XII of Government Senior Secondary School, Phagli, stood second while Suman who is pursuing her M Com from RKMV stood third. The winners were awarded cash prize of Rs 10,000 as first prize Rs 5,000 as second prize and Rs 3,000 as third prize.

Additionally, three consolation prizes of Rs 1,000 and five prizes of Rs 500 were also awarded. Special recognition was given to the youngest participant 10-year-old Ira Gupta from Auckland House School, who completed the race within the cut-off time. Notably, Suman Lata, a cancer survivor, also participated and successfully finished the race.

All participants received finishers’ medals as a token of appreciation for their commitment to the cause.
