OBC leader from Dharamsala Rakesh Chaudhary allegedly died by suicide today. The authorities of Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital at Tanda in Kangra confirmed that he died in the ICU around 4 pm.

Chaudhary was admitted to Tanda medical college with suspected poisoning yesterday night. Sources said that he was suspected to have made an attempt to end his life by consuming poison. He was reportedly suffering from depression, they added.

The sources said that Chaudhary’s wife was admitted to Tanda medical college on Sunday. She also had allegedly made an attempt to end her life but her condition was stated to be stable and out of danger.

SP, Kangra, Shalini Agnihotri said that Chaudhary was admitted to Tanda medical college yesterday. His wife was out of danger but still not in a position to give a statement.

Chaudhary, an OBC leader, had contested elections thrice, once on the BJP ticket and twice as an Independent candidate.

He had contested the Dharamsala Assembly byelection in 2019 as an Independent candidate for the first time. He had secured about 16,000 votes and finished second behind winner BJP candidate Vishal Nehria.

He had contested the 2022 Assembly elections on the BJP ticket from Dharamsala but lost to Congress candidate Sudhir Sharma by a margin of about 3,000 votes. He had contested the recent Assembly byelection to the Dharamsala seat as an Independent candidate. He had left the BJP after the party inducted Congress rebel Sudhir Sharma and fielded him from Dharamsala.

Meanwhile, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu have expressed grief over the untimely demise of former BJP leader Rakesh Chaudhary, who passed away at Dr Rajindra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital at Tanda.
