Nurpur, August 26

Gagan Singh, a famous folk singer of the state who hails from Nurpur, had started his musical journey from nearby Kukher village just after completing matriculation from the village’s government high school.

Stage show at Nurpur Fort today

Gagan Singh is holding a stage show in Nurpur on August 27 on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the two-day state-level Janmashtami festival on the premises of historical Brijraj Swami temple in Nurpur Fort

Initially, he used to sing film songs at school farewell parties and got recognition due to his captivating voice.

After completing his secondary education from Nurpur government senior secondary school in 1995, his chemistry lecturer advised him to choose music as a subject in graduation and higher studies.

His musical journey started from Government Degree College, Dehri (Nurpur). He completed his postgraduation, MPhil from Panjab University and PhD in music from Guru Nanak Dev University. After that, he moved to Mumbai in 2007 to try his luck in music industry. He told The Tribune that in Mumbai, he was supported by Manohar Ayyar, who runs a musical group ‘Keep Alive’. He introduced him to Ananth Vaidyanathan, an Indian singing trainer.

After appreciating his performance and hard work, legendary music director Rajesh Roshan called him, initiating him into professional singing. He also worked as a pre-casting judge in the Indian Idol reality show in 2008-09.

During his journey, Gagan also started music direction in Bollywood, and famous singers like Shan, Javed Ali, Raja Hassan and Sidharth Mahadevan have also sung under his music direction in Mumbai. He has sung in Hindi-dubbed South film ‘Bachan’ and Hindi movie ‘Chhotu’ that will be released this year-end.

Gagan said so far, he had released eight Hindi songs, and out of these, four had been composed by him, three Himachali folk songs and a Punjabi song. He claimed that all songs had been viewed by lakhs of YouTube viewers. He has also performed as many as 200 stage shows and sung numerous songs in these shows in India, Canada, Thailand and Indonesia.

He is also holding a stage show at his native place Nurpur on August 27 on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the two-day state-level Janmashtami festival on the premises of historical Brijraj Swami temple in Nurpur Fort.
