Mandi nursing student’s death: Murder case registered
The police have finally registered a murder case in the death of Anjana Thakur, a BSc nursing student at Aroma Nursing College in Sundernagar, Mandi. The case has been filed under Section 103 (murder) of the BNS, following intense pressure from the victim’s family and residents.
BR Kaundal, a social activist, said the FIR has been registered at Sundernagar Police Station on Sunday. He criticised the delay in registering the case, which came 17 days after Anjana’s death. The victim’s family had been demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, alleging that Anjana’s death was a planned murder. Kaundal added that charges of destroying evidence and concealing information could be added to the case as investigations continue.
The delay in the registration of the FIR sparked widespread public outrage, leading to protests outside the Mandi Superintendent of Police’s (SP) office. Activists and family members of the deceased raised questions on the police's inaction, urging authorities to take immediate action. Kaundal also pointed out that such delays in registering an FIR in serious cases could be viewed as contempt of court.
Mandi SP Sakshi Verma said the FIR had been filed based on the family’s complaint. The SP assured that a thorough investigation was underway to uncover the truth behind the death. As the investigation progresses, the community remains on edge, hoping for justice in this case.
