Mandi DC emphasises crucial role of journalists in democracy

On the occasion of National Press Day, a district-level programme was organised on Saturday at the Deputy Commissioner’s office auditorium, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan.

A seminar on “The Changing Landscape of the Press”, as endorsed by the Press Council of India, was also held, with journalists from local newspapers and media houses participating and sharing their views.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the crucial role of the press as one of the four pillars of democracy.

He highlighted the significant contribution of journalism from the freedom movement to the present day in promoting national development and preserving Indian values.

He commended the efforts of the press in uplifting society and congratulated media representatives for their contributions. The event, he noted, also served as a reminder to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity.

The DC stressed the increasing importance of media in today’s digital age, particularly in combating misinformation and disinformation. He said journalists should remain vigilant and responsible in their work to ensure the truth reaches the public.

Devgan expressed confidence that senior journalists would not only share their experiences with young media professionals, but also pass on the legacy of ethical journalism to the next generation.

Government Vallabh College, Mandi, also celebrated National Press Day with great fervour, where students of Journalism Department took part in a declamation contest. They expressed their views on the importance of the day. The event was organised by Journalism Department head Dr Chaman and Assistant Professor Aditi Sharma.
