The Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department is looking to fill up around 60 per cent of the around 2,500 vacant post in the department. “Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has asked us to put up the proposal for filling up the vacant posts in the Cabinet for approval. We have prepared the proposal and we want to fill up at least 60 per cent of the vacant posts in the government,” said Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh in a press conference here today.

Currently, several panchayats are without panchayat secretaries, technical assistants and other staff. “The previous BJP government carved out 412 new panchayats but did not provide adequate staff and infrastructure for running these panchayats,” the minister said, shifting the blame for inadequate staff at the panchayat level.

The minister further said the work was underway to provide video conferencing facilities in 1,546 panchayats across the state. “It will help in establishing better communication with the representatives of the gram panchayats,” he said.

Besides, the minister spelt out the achievements of the Congress government in its two years in office as the government is holding a function in Bilaspur tomorrow (on Wednesday) to celebrate the completion of two years in power.

“The Congress government has achieved several milestones in these two years. No matter what the BJP says, the government has done a lot of work for public welfare in different sectors,” he said. He said the state government has offered more jobs in the last two years than the BJP offered during its entire tenure of five years.
