A delegation of the District Congress Committee (DCC) submitted a memorandum to the Governor through Kullu DC demanding a judicial enquiry in the murder of former panchayat president Paras Ram Negi. The deceased and his wife Youm Devi Negi were grievously injured after being brutally assaulted by Khimi Ram, alias Kewalu, and his accomplices on August 25. Paras Ram succumbed to his injuries at the PGI, Chandigarh, on September 13.

DCC vice-president Uttam Sharma said that there is no one to take care of Paras Ram’s family and his wife is still undergoing treatment in Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College, Ner Chowk. The members demanded that compensation should be given to the family and one of his two sons be given employment.

Sharma said that such an incident has come to the fore in Kullu district for the first time which is shameful and a threat to otherwise peaceful Devbhoomi.

He alleged that the functioning of the police was under scanner as till now all the accused of assault have not been arrested. Eleven persons were held by police, but two were later released.

Kullu SP Gurdev Sharma said that 11 alleged accused were held while two were released on the statement of Youm Devi. He said that the police have gathered strong evidence against the nine accused arrested in the case, who are in judicial custody. He said the forensic team has collected evidence from the spot along with the CCTV footage, which has been sent for investigation.

He said that the statements of more than 24 persons have been recorded and police investigation is going on in a fair manner. No stone will be left unturned to bring the culprits to justice. He further said that the police will soon present a challan in court and ensure that all the accused are punished.
