Inaugurated in 2017, cracks in Solan Mini-Secretariat spark safety concerns
The structural integrity of the Solan Mini-Secretariat, inaugurated in 2017, is under scrutiny after significant cracks appeared in parts of the building. The affected areas include the SP office, the National Informatics Centre and the video conferencing hall located on the lower floors.
On the fifth floor, SP Gaurav Singh was alarmed when tiled flooring split with a loud thud. In response, the SP and DSP vacated their offices, relocating to alternative spaces. Additional staff were shifted to police lines on the bypass for safety.
The site selection has come under question, as it was reportedly marshy and prone to sinking. The rear portion of the building appears to be subsiding, putting pressure on weaker structural components like beams. Concerns about construction quality were raised during the foundation stage, but no significant action was taken at the time.
The building, constructed at a cost of Rs 25.24 crore, was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in August 2017. Ravi Bhatti, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, stated that the SP office floor had been dug up and examined. While he claimed the structure remains intact, a team of senior officers is scheduled to inspect the building and recommend necessary repairs.
The situation raises serious questions about oversight during construction and site selection, highlighting the need for immediate remedial measures to ensure safety.
