The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) ‘let go’ revenue of Rs 78.64 lakh on the occasion Bhaiya Dooj by offering free travel to women across the state. “Of the total amount, Rs 63.39 lakh was waived off for free travel of women. The remaining amount went into discounted travel for students, people with special needs and various other categories,” said HRTC MD Rohan Chand Thakur.

From September onwards this year, the HRTC has started issuing zero and discounted tickets to passengers entitled to subsidised travel. The issuance of zero ticket has helped HRTC to quantify the amount it loses on free and subsidised travel every day. As per the HRTC, it loses approximately Rs 50 lakh everyday on free and concessional travel it offers to various categories of passengers.

“We are pleased to support women travellers, especially during such significant cultural occasions. This initiative is a vital part of our efforts to recognise and empower women in our society, said Thakur. “By providing free transportation, we are not just offering a service but also reinforcing the value of women’s contributions to our culture and communities,” he added. To facilitate easy travel for women on the occasion, the HRTC ran additional buses across the state.
