HPU students apprised of Greek culture
Shimla, August 14
Students of the Department of Political Science, Himachal Pradesh University, were provided extensive knowledge about the Greek’s Roma culture and rights during a guest lecture by Vicky Markati, a renowned expert. During the lecture, Markati told the students that the relationship between India and Greece had existed since the time of the Mahabharata, with continuous cultural, commercial and military exchanges between the two countries.
Prof Harish Thakur delivered a lecture on the rights and future of the Roma community, who are the descendants of Indians residing in Europe. “At present, there are approximately 6.5 million Roma refugees or stateless individuals worldwide, with around 1.4 million residing in Europe alone,” he said.
Markati came to India for interviewing Prof Harish Thakur regarding his research papers on the Roma community. She is making a documentary about the life and culture of the Roma community. Bollywood’s renowned film producer Ravinder Jeet Daria was also present on the occasion. — TNS
