Governor attends first convocation of Mandi’s Sardar Patel University
Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla presided over the inaugural convocation of Sardar Patel University (SPU), Mandi, today. During the ceremony, the Governor conferred degrees upon 333 students and awarded 36 medals, including 12 gold medals, to recognise academic excellence of the students.
In his address, the Governor praised the university's rapid progress since its establishment, noting the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020, the creation of an Indian Knowledge Tradition Cell and the formation of various academic committees as significant achievements. He described the convocation as a pivotal event that not only marks academic success, but also serves as a catalyst for future aspirations and lifelong learning.
"Convocation is more than a ceremonial event, it marks a new direction in the lives of students and inspires them for their future endeavours,” Shukla emphasised. He highlighted the role of education in fostering intellectual, moral and spiritual growth, aligning with the principles of the National Education Policy.
The Governor expressed optimism about the SPU's future, hoping it would rise to become one of India's leading universities. Reflecting on India’s demographic advantage and economic growth, he underscored the country's potential to become a developed nation by 2047.
The Governor commended Vice Chancellor Lalit Kumar Awasthy for his rapid execution of development projects at the university.
In his remarks, Rajiv Ahuja, Director of IIT, emphasised the importance of research and multi-disciplinary education for university advancement. Ahuja advocated for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology into the curriculum, particularly in the agritech and food processing sectors.
Chander Shekhar, MLA and member of the University Executive Council, urged graduates to confront global challenges while staying true to their cultural roots and traditions. Shekhar also called for the university to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel with year-long programmes.
CP Verma, Secretary to the Governor; Rakhi Kehlon, Mandi Divisional Commissioner; Apoorv Devgan, Deputy Commissioner; Sakshi Verma, Superintendent of Police; and others were also present on the occasion.
The ceremony concluded with the Vice Chancellor presenting a report on the university’s achievements and development.
