Flash flood devastates Miyar valley of Lahaul-Spiti

35 families affected, shifted to safer places; irrigation canals, school building damaged

In a recent incident of flooding at Karpat Nallah in the remote Myar valley of tribal district Lahaul and Spiti, nearly 13 bigha of agricultural land belonging to local villagers was heavily silted last evening, resulting in significant crop damage. The flooding occurred suddenly, prompting villagers to evacuate swiftly to safeguard their lives.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Udaipur, Keshav Ram, stated that the affected villagers were relocated to safer areas. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported nor major property was damaged. In response to the crisis, a relief and rescue team was immediately sent to the spot. The administration has ensured that all 35 affected families are provided arrangements for food and accommodation.

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana today visited Karpat village to inspect the extent of the damage. She noted that while the primary losses include damage to agricultural land and crops, some government infrastructure was also affected. MLA Rana assured that compensation for the agricultural losses would be arranged promptly.

“Immediate relief steps have been initiated, including the provision of relief shelters, ration material and water supply. The administration will soon conduct a survey to look into the reasons of the flash floods. This assessment will guide future preparation and action needed to prevent similar incidents,” the MLA assured the affected people.

According to SDM Keshav Ram, the estimated damage to property was around Rs 2.5 crore. The flooding has caused substantial damage to infrastructure, including four irrigation canals, a veterinary dispensary building, public toilets and a primary school building. A detailed evaluation of the damage to other government property is currently underway.

“The authorities were at the site today, working to address the immediate needs and concerns of the affected residents and to assess and mitigate the impact of the flooding,” the SDM said
