Exploring Kangra valley: Age no bar for thrill seekers
In an era plagued by traffic jams and smog, what better way to traverse the picturesque Kangra Valley than on a bicycle? Sixteen senior citizens, young at heart, embarked on a thrilling 10-day, 500-km cycling journey across the valley. With sheer endurance and determination, these cyclists proved that age is truly just a number.
The group — comprising doctors, entrepreneurs, and couples — landed in Dharamsala on November 10. Undeterred by jet lag, stomach bugs or unpredictable November weather, they set off on the aptly named Tour De Kangra. Their route covered Dharamsala, Palampur, Andretta, Baijnath, Bir-Billing, Raj Gundha, Chota Bhangal, Barot, Jogindernagar, Sujanpur, Garli-Pragpur and Guler, before culminating in Dharamshala. Along the way, they explored landmarks like Masroor’s rock-cut temples, the Pong Wetlands, and Tattapani’s soothing waters, ending their journey at Kareri Lake in Shahpur.
A major highlight was crossing the newly opened Chinar Pass in Chota Bhangal valley, a former shepherd route offering breathtaking views of untouched wilderness. At every stop, they were greeted by warm and welcoming locals. Diana Gibb, a 70-year-old doctor and key founding member of Dharamsala’s Delek Hospital, shared her emotional connection to the valley, reminiscing about its serene beauty in the 1980s.
Participants lauded the valley’s beauty and the hospitality of its residents. Amandita, a cyclist, said: “The high passes and deep river valleys are awe-inspiring. The locals cheered us on and made us feel at home.”
Local residents Phillipa Russell and her husband Jeremy played pivotal roles in the event’s success. While Phillipa managed logistics and accommodations, Jeremy, an avid cyclist, meticulously planned the route. Support came from Reece and local cycling enthusiasts Rohit Samuel and Dr Shubham Bedwa, who ensured smooth operations.
The cyclists’ gear and mechanical support were provided by the Bike Store Una, while Nishtha NGO gave the participants a traditional Himachali welcome, complete with folk dances and cultural displays. The event was not only an adventure but also a celebration of Kangra’s rich landscapes and cultural heritage.
Tour De Kangra stood as a testament to the resilience and adventurous spirit of senior citizens, inspiring others to embrace an active lifestyle.
