Explore possibility of merging schools with low enrolment: Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu
Shimla, July 24
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Tuesday said the state government was laying focus on providing quality education to students in government educational institutions. He presided over a meeting of senior officers of the Education Department here. He expressed serious concern over the declining number of students enrolled in government primary schools.
He said that there were 89 government primary schools and 10 government middle schools having no enrolled students in the state. “In 701 primary schools, the students’ enrolment is less than five. As many as 287 of these schools are located within a radius of 2 km of another school. As many as 46 middle schools are within a radius of 3 km,” he added.

Sukhu said that in view of the above facts it was essential to rationalise the functioning of schools and directed the Education Department to explore the possibility of merging schools having low enrolment. “This step will not only ensure adequate staff in the schools but also pave the way for providing quality education to students studying in government schools,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the government was setting up Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools in each Assembly constituency in a phased manner, which would ensure quality education and holistic development of the students to make them confident citizens of the nation.
He said that two fully equipped boarding schools would be established in tribal areas of Kinnaur and Spiti to provide better education facilities to the students. He directed the department to identify suitable land to set up these boarding schools in the respective areas. He said to ensure better resource mobilisation of the schools, the government has formed clusters.
