Electricity board fines consumer ~22,922 for power theft in Nahan
In a major crackdown against power theft, the state electricity board has penalised a consumer in the Chidawali area of Nahan after discovering they were involved in the direct theft of electricity. The board has imposed a fine of Rs 22,922 on the property owner, with a notice demanding payment within three days.
Officials warned that a failure to pay the fine within the stipulated time would result in further legal action against the homeowner. As an immediate measure, the board has disconnected the electricity supply to the property.
According to reports, the incident took place on Tuesday, when a team led by junior engineer Gaurav Sharma and team member Suraj Dhiman from Nahan Subdivision-1 conducted an inspection in the Chidawali area. During the inspection, they found that the consumer had bypassed the electricity meter and was using service wires to power a motor, which was being used to lift water directly from the supply.
In response, the electricity board confiscated both the service wire and the motor that was being used with the illegal connection. Mahesh Chaudhary, Assistant Engineer, Electricity Department, confirmed the action, stating, “The homeowner has been fined Rs 22,922 for directly stealing electricity, using service wires. If the fine is not paid within three days, an FIR will be lodged, and further departmental action will follow.”
Chaudhary added that the immediate disconnection of the property’s electricity supply was necessary to prevent further illegal use. The board’s action is being seen as a warning to other potential offenders.
