Demand for splitting Kala Amb panchayat into three gains pace
Residents of two villages under the jurisdiction of Kala Amb panchayat, one of the largest in the Nahan development block, have raised a demand for the creation of two separate gram panchayats. Villagers from Moginand and Nagal Suketi have voiced their concern about developmental neglect and have formally submitted a proposal to the district administration.
A resolution supporting the demand was passed in the recent Gram Sabha meeting of the panchayat. Following this, a delegation of villagers met Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) LR Verma at the district headquarters in Nahan to present a memorandum seeking administrative action.
According to the memorandum, the residents are requesting that Moginand and Nagal Suketi be separated from Kala Amb to form independent gram panchayats. Villagers argue that the massive size of the existing panchayat, with a total of 1,431 families and a population of 5,852, has resulted in uneven development.
Moginand, with a population of 2,000, and Nagal Suketi, home to approximately 1,400 residents, feel particularly neglected. “The development needs of these villages often go unaddressed because of the large geographical area and population of Kala Amb Panchayat,” said a representative of the delegation.
Residents highlighted that critical infrastructure and basic amenities such as roads, water supply and sanitation are lagging in these villages. They believe that creating smaller panchayats will ensure focused governance and faster execution of developmental projects.
“Smaller panchayats will allow local governance to address the unique needs of each area effectively,” said one villager, adding that such a move is essential to ensure equitable distribution of resources and attention to all regions.
The proposal has brought attention to the challenges posed by managing large panchayats in rural areas. With over 5,800 residents spread across Kala Amb Panchayat, administrative officials acknowledge that service delivery and resource allocation become increasingly complex.
ADC Verma assured the delegation that their concerns would be reviewed, and the matter would be forwarded to higher authorities for consideration. “The district administration will conduct a feasibility study and evaluate the potential benefits of creating new panchayats in these regions,” Verma said.
If approved, the division of Kala Amb Panchayat will not only benefit Moginand and Nagal Suketi but also streamline governance for the remaining areas under Kala Amb. The proposal is expected to go through a detailed review process, including population assessment, resource availability and administrative feasibility, before any final decision is made.
