The supreme spiritual leader of the Tibetans, the Dalai Lama turned 89 today. The Tibetan establishment-in-exile and the Tibetans celebrated the occasion in the main temple of the Dalai Lama at McLeodganj.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today attended the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) official celebration of the 14th Dalai Lama’s 89th birthday anniversary as the chief guest.

The Dalai Lama is in the US recovering from knee transplant surgery. His personal physician issued a statement that the Dalai Lama was recovering well and had been moved from the hospital to the outskirts of New York where he was recuperating.

The birthday of the Dalai Lama was a special occasion for Tibetans living in Tibet and exile. Dance and cultural performances were presented by the artists from the Tibetan Institute for Performing Arts (TIPA). The Dalai Lama’s admirers from across the world, including world leaders, greeted him on his birthday.With the Dalai Lama aging, concerns are being expressed over his successor.

Rubbishes health rumours

In a video message released from the US, the Dalai Lama said lot of misinformation was being spread about his health. “I am doing well but for slight problem in my knees. Despite the fact that I am about to reach 90, my health is good and so relax and be at ease. I am feeling physically fit,” he said.
