Army Public School (APS), Dagshai, won the Major Udai Singh memorial inter-school quiz competition, which concluded at Dagshai. It featured an enthusiastic participation by eight teams from various schools. Following a rigorous screening test, six teams advanced to the decisive final round. After an intense competition, APS, Dagshai emerged victorious, claiming the first position while APS, Ambala, secured the second position and DAV, Darlaghat, romped home the third place.

The quiz comprised eight challenging rounds, including general awareness, straight picture round, heritage, sports, an audio round, a visual round, a buzzer round, and a rapid fire segment. The event not only tested the students’ knowledge but also showcased their quick thinking and teamwork. The quiz was conducted by the versatile quiz master Ravi Sharma, who kept the audience engaged with his thought-provoking questions and lively commentary.

Maj Udai Singh, an alumni of 1992 batch of APS Dagshai and a Shaurya Chakra awardee, was assigned a key operation on November 29, 2003. He was tasked to demolish the intelligence and logistics network being provided to the terrorists by the overground workers in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. During the deadly fire fight that ensued, the valiant soldier sustained gunshot wound in the neck, while his buddy sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Displaying extraordinary courage, with utter disregard to personal safety, Major Udai continued to close in with the terrorists, killing one terrorist and wounding another. He helped extricate his fatally injured buddy before succumbing to his injuries.

Deep rooted in valour and a gritty officer, Major Udai led from the front like a able military leader. He was conferred the “Shaurya Chakra” for displaying outstanding courage, leadership and camaraderie of highest order.

Survived by his father, an Army veteran Col KKK Singh, mother Sudha Singh and sister Lalima, Major Udai has left behind a legacy which has been inspiring students from his alma mater to join the defence forces.

Speaking at the event, Principal Ritambra Ghai congratulated the winners and emphasised the importance of reading and gaining knowledge. She encouraged all students to continue their quest for learning and personal growth.

The competition helped foster a spirit of competition besides celebrating the joy of learning among students.
