The credit for increasing the pace of development in Himachal goes to the BJP government at the Centre, whereas the state had always yearned for development during the long rule of the Congress, said Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur here today.

Telecom, road infra strengthened

  • Four-lane highways are being constructed in the state. Where earlier it used to take 12 to 14 hours to reach Shimla or Manali from New Delhi, today it takes only six to seven hours by road, said Jai Ram Thakur
  • Telecommunication and road infrastructure has been strengthened even in remote villages, he added
  • Thakur said that in the past 10 years, the Centre emphasised on increasing connectivity, the result of which was that tourism business was at its peak
  • Due to the construction of good roads, apple and other fruits can now easily be transported to big and distant markets

He said, “The Union Government headed by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had given a special economic package to Himachal and there was never a halt in the pace of development. After this, when the UPA ruled at the Centre for 10 years, Himachal was not only discriminated against in development but also prominent Congress leaders of the state were not given time to meet the Central ministers in New Delhi. This happened many times during the tenure of thethen Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.”

Thakur said, “Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of the country in 2014 and he always ensured speedy development in Himachal. In the 10 years, Modi had visited Himachal 15 times. In the past five years, the Prime Minister had participated in government programmes nine times. Today, in Himachal, whether it is about the construction of four-lane highways or AIIMS, the credit goes to the Prime Minister.”

He added, “The Prime Minister ensured the construction of the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang in record time to provide road connectivity to Lahaul Spiti district round the year. The Prime Minister has ensured telecom connectivity in remote villages of the Spiti valley. The Congress, which ruled at the Centre for many years, did not even think of providing telecommunication services in remote villages of the Spiti valley.”

Thakur said that the Prime Minister had shown his commitment to development by talking to the people of Gue village in the Spiti valley on mobile phone. Thakur took part in social programmes and interacted with people in the Seraj, Balh and Sadar Assembly constituencies of Mandi district.
