The state CID today filed a chargesheet in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Nalagarh, against four policemen deputed at Nalagarh in 2023 for torturing a couple using the third degree method during remand, causing a serious injury in the ear to the man.

A case was registered against them at Nalagarh police station on December 27, 2023, on the basis of a medical report and the orders of a Nalagarh court. The case was later transferred to the state CID. A special investigation team was constituted to probe it.

Six policemen — a DSP (leave reserve) Lakhbeer, former SHO Kuldeep Sharma, Sub Inspector Ashok Rana, Constable Sunil, ASI Kalyan and Head Constable Chanderkiran — had been booked in the case.

Constable Sunil and DSP Lakhbeer are still at large. Among the other four ASI Kalyan was bailed out by the high court yesterday.

They were booked for causing grievous hurt to extort confession, assault on woman with intent to outrage her modesty, insulting a woman and criminal intimidation by the Nalagarh police on a complaint filed by an Uttrakhand woman, who herself was an accused in a cheating and forgery case.

The probe while throwing light over their role in the incident has besmirched the image of the Nalagarh police.

The about 400-page chargesheet has cited around 35 witnesses. All charges registered in the FIR have qualified for the chargesheet and none has been dropped making it a serious case of police brutality.

Another team of CID was also probing a case registered by Sub Inspector Ashok Rana on December 30, 2023 against the Uttarakhand-based couple, accusing them of cheating and forgery case at Nalagarh as well as a DSP for threatening a public servant and hatching a criminal conspiracy.
