Chamba town resonated with devotional hymns on Wednesday, with the Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal leading the residents in paying floral tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and Late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversary.

Early in the morning, a ‘prabhat pheri’ (morning procession) was taken through the town. Citizens, schoolchildren and employees participated in the procession, spreading messages of peace and harmony throughout the town.

The Deputy Commissioner also presided over the concluding ceremony of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva-2024’ fortnight, along with the prize distribution event under the TB-Free campaign, and the inauguration of a 10-day special programme under the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign.

He also inaugurated a one-day health check-up camp and self-help group fair under the National Urban and Rural Livelihood Mission.

In his presidential address, Mukesh Repaswal paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He emphasised the importance of collective public participation in ensuring better cleanliness in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for waste segregation at the doorstep and urged people to reflect on their social behaviour towards cleanliness. He mentioned that more than 516 black spots were cleared of waste across all development blocks in the district during the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva-2024’ fortnight.

Regarding the complete eradication of tuberculosis in the district by 2025, the Deputy Commissioner urged individuals to become ‘Nikshay Mitras’ and assist TB patients.

Repaswal also appealed the residents to raise awareness about social evils like child marriage. He announced the upcoming launch of the “Jeevan Uphaar” programme to combat malnutrition among children in the district.

Block Congress Committee pays tributes to leaders

Meanwhile, the Block Congress Committee, Chamba, also held an event marking the celebration of the birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri during which the Congress leaders paid floral tributes to the two great leaders.

Speaking at the event, Thakur emphasised that Mahatma Gandhi was a universally respected leader. He highlighted how Gandhi freed India from British colonial rule through the path of non-violence and truth. Thakur also remembered Shastri as an exemplary leader, noting that Shastri led the nation for nearly two years, providing strategic leadership during the India-Pakistan War and spearheading the Green Revolution in the country. He recalled Shastri’s famous slogan, “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”, which continues to resonate across India.

DAV schools ends cleanliness drive

The DAV Public School, Chamba, also concluded its fortnight-long cleanliness drive under ‘Swacchata Hi Seva’ initiative today. The campaign ran from September 17 to October 2. On the concluding event the students, staff and residents from the locality paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri before cleaning the school campus and surrounding areas and Chamunda Temple premises.
