Canoeing, kayaking contest at Pong Dam
Himachal Pradesh University, under the banner of Government College, Dehri, organised a two-day canoeing and kayaking championship at the Regional Water Sports Centre, Pong Reservoir, in the lower Kangra hills. The championship concluded on Sunday which was presided over by Sanjay Sharma, Director, Sports Department of HP University. 18 teams (men and women) comprising as many as 90 students from nine government colleges participated in the state-level water sports championship.
5Government College, Dehri, won 57 medals in men category and 39 medals in women category and was declared the overall champion in the water sports competition. Government College, Indora, got the second position in men and women categories whereas Government College, Mandi, won the third position in the men category. MLCM Government College, Sundernagar, won the third position in the women section. The event was conducted in 1000, 500 and 200 mt categories both for men and women.
The winning teams were honoured with medals and trophies by the chief guest Sanjay Sharma. In his keynote address, Sharma said water sports, like kayaking and canoeing, were not only important for physical health but also helped in mental development. He said this was the second water sports competition of this year organised by the HP University. He said the university would submit its demand to the state government for hiring the services of its own sports coach. Dr Sachin Kumar, Principal, Government College, Dehri, had declared the water sports competition open on Saturday.
