An anti-freeze water supply system is under-construction in the Spiti valley of Lahaul and Spiti district to tackle recurring supply challenges during harsh winter months. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that residents of the region have access to potable water in their homes even in sub-zero temperatures.

Every winter, sub-zero temperatures in the Spiti valley cause severe supply disruptions, as water freezes in pipes and taps, leaving residents without access to drinking water. To address this pressing issue, the state government has approved a budget of Rs 3.89 crore for the installation of an anti-freeze water supply system. The project will primarily benefit Kaza and its surrounding areas, covering a population of around 2,000.

Tenzin, SDO of the Jal Shakti Department at Kaza, said that the construction work was being carried out under the guidance of Executive Engineer Manoj Negi and on the instructions of Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana. He emphasised that the department had set a target of completing the project by September next year so that the residents of the region get reliable water supply next winter.

“This initiative is crucial for mitigating the water shortage problem faced by the residents of the Spiti valley due to freezing temperatures. With the anti-freeze system in place, households in Kaza and surrounding areas will have continuous access to potable water in the winter months,” said Tenzin.

Drilling machines and specialised workforce have been deployed at Kaza to expedite the work on the project and ensure its timely completion. The anti-freeze water supply system will not only enhance the quality of life of the residents but will also provide long-term solutions to the water crisis faced by the rural population during the winter.

“We have waited for this system for years. The freezing temperatures have always made it difficult for us to get water supply during the winter and this project will bring great relief to all of us,” said Chhering, a local.
