Annual athletics meet kick-starts at Vallabh Government College
The annual athletics meet at Vallabh Government College, Mandi, was officially inaugurated yesterday by Prof Lalit Kumar Awasthi, Vice-Chancellor of Sardar Patel University (SPU).
Awasthi unfurled the flag to mark the opening of the event. Addressing the athletes, he emphasised the importance of sports in the holistic development of individuals and the significant role outdoor games played in society. He said the SPU was committed to delivering high-quality education, and applauded the college for organising a well-structured event.
“Events like these foster qualities of determination, patience, and resilience,” Awasthi said, highlighting the importance of the meet in providing both participants and spectators a memorable experience beyond just competitions.
As a token of appreciation, Vallabh Government College, Mandi, Principal Surina Sharma presented mementos to Awasthi and Sunil Verma, Controller of Examinations at SPU. In her speech, Sharma said the athletic meet offered students an excellent opportunity to display their athletic talents, while also fostering unity within the college community and the local area.
The event opened with a spectacular marchpast, led by the NCC Air Wing and Army Wing contingents, under the command of Flying Officer Dr Chaman.
The march was led by Cadet Warrant Officer Ankush Sharma (Air Wing), Senior Under Officer Bharat Bhushan (Army Wing), and Senior Under Officer Anchal (Girls’ Army Wing). Thousands of students from various departments participated in the ceremonial procession.
The competition saw some strong performances on its opening day.
Dikshit Parashar claimed the first place in the men’s 100-m race, while Kanta Thakur took the top spot in the women’s 100-m race.
Other highlights included Boleesh Kumar winning the men’s 400-m race and Leelamani securing first position in the men’s javelin throw.
The event is being meticulously coordinated by Dr Hemraj Rana and Dr Madhavi Joshi, with the support of the faculty, staff, committee members and students.
Notable attendees included Sunil Verma and Dr Banita Saklani (State President, Himachal Government College Teacher Association), making the event a significant gathering for the college and the community.
