Alarm over diarrhoea outbreak in Manali, surrounding areas

43 confirmed cases reported, 19 hospitalised since October 13 so far

In the past few days, a surge in diarrhoea cases has created panic in Manali and its surrounding areas. As many as 19 individuals are hospitalised, while 24 with mild symptoms are being treated at home. With 43 confirmed cases reported since October 13, Gadherani, Simsa, Chhiyal, Nasogi, Goshali, Manali town and Old Manali were identified as the most affected areas.

11 patients discharged

Of the total 19 hospitalised patients, 11 patients have been discharged, while seven others are still undergoing treatment at the Manali hospital. One patient suffering from associated diseases was referred to a higher health institution for better treatment. — Medical Officer, Naggar

The local Health Department dispatched teams to assess the situation and provide necessary medical care. Sixteen patients were admitted to the Manali Civil Hospital, while three others were taken to the Mission Hospital for treatment. Health officials are actively investigating the cause of the outbreak, with an emphasis on ensuring the safety of the residents and tourists alike.

Dr Karan, the Block Medical Officer (BMO) of Naggar, said, “Our teams are on the ground, providing primary treatment and support to the affected individuals. We are conducting thorough examination to identify potential sources of contamination and prevent further spread.”

“Of the total 19 hospitalised patients, 11 patients have been discharged, while seven others are still undergoing treatment at the Manali hospital. One patient suffering from associated diseases was referred to a higher health institution for better treatment,” he said.

Dr Karan said, “Now the situation is under control and there is no need to panic. In the last 24 hours, only two cases of diarrhoea were reported. Today, we have collected water samples to check the purity of drinking water. Chlorination of water sources have been done by the Jal Shakti Department.”

“Residents are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe stomach cramps, dehydration or persistent diarrhoea,” he added.

As a popular tourist destination, Manali attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Health Department is keen to assure tourists that all necessary precautions are being taken. They are urging residents and visitors to maintain good hygiene practices, particularly emphasising the importance of drinking clean water and consuming properly cooked food.

Local authorities are also coordinating with community leaders to spread awareness about preventive measures. Public health campaign will be initiated to educate the population on the symptoms and prevention of diarrhoea.
