AIDWA demands appointment of women’s panel chairperson
The Himachal Pradesh State Committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has urged the state government to immediately appoint a Chairperson for the Himachal Pradesh State Commission for Women and fill vacant posts to ensure justice for women.
AIDWA state president Falma Chauhan expressed concern over the commission’s inability to function effectively due to vacant positions. Highlighting the increasing crime against women, she stated that every day, 86 women fall victim to rape, while 49 experience some form of violence every hour. She noted that young girls are particularly vulnerable, with rising incidents of violence in schools and colleges.
Chauhan attributed the surge in violence to drug abuse, unemployment and societal pressures. She criticised the suppression of cases, the reluctance of police to file FIRs due to societal stigma, and the lengthy judicial processes that discourage women from seeking justice through courts. Many women turn to the Women’s Commission for support, but its current inefficiency hinders timely intervention.
