Advisory issued on black ice hazard as temperature in Lahaul-Spiti falls
As temperatures continue to drop in Lahaul and Spiti district, the local police have issued an advisory to tourists and residents, warning them about the dangers of black ice on roads and going near water bodies. Due to the plummeting temperatures in the region, the water bodies are freezing and black ice is forming on roads, especially during early morning and evening hours. This phenomenon makes the roads slippery, posing a significant risk to vehicles and pedestrians.
Lahaul and Spiti SP Mayank Chaudhary said that all Station House Officers (SHOs) in the district had been instructed to make regular announcements to alert the public about the danger of black ice. The announcements were being made through loudspeakers. “We want to ensure that everyone, including visitors, is aware of the hazards of black ice, particularly during the colder parts of the day,” he added.
Black ice is particularly hazardous because it often forms on roads in shaded areas where sunlight cannot reach to thaw the surface. Unlike regular ice, black ice is difficult to see, making it especially dangerous for vehicle drivers. Many accidents occur when vehicles suddenly lose traction on a slippery surface.
The authorities concerned are advising vehicle drivers to exercise extreme caution while travelling in affected areas, reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. In addition to black ice on roads, there is concern that due to the freezing of rivulets and streams people may go close to these. The police have warned tourists to avoid walking on frozen surfaces of rivers and drains, as the ice may not be thick enough to bear their weight and could crack, leading to accidents.
The district police are taking a proactive approach to public safety. The SP has assured the public that the police are fully prepared to handle the challenges posed by the cold weather. “We are taking all necessary precautions and are ready to serve the community in these harsh conditions,” he added.
