Shimla is set to receive 24x7 drinking water supply from May next year as the town will be getting additional 67 million litres per day (MLD) water from Sutlej river, putting an end to the water woes of the town. At present, the town receives around 46 MLD water on a daily basis, with a majority of the supply coming from Gumma, Giri, Charith, Churot, Koti Brandi and Seog.

Virender Thakur, Managing Director, Managing Director, Shimla Jal Prabhandan Nigam Ltd (SJPNL), has said that a 22-km-long pipeline to pump water from Shakroli village to Sanjauli was almost complete and work was going on at the pumping station.

At a recent meeting of the SJPNL with the Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Shimla, it was promised that all pending works would be completed by May 2025.

The Mayor has also directed the officials concerned to expedite the work. He said efforts were being made to ensure that there was no shortage of drinking water in the town, especially during the summer and monsoon season. Chauhan said besides this project, the corporation has increased its water storage capacity and also planned to use water from nullahs in public toilets instead of drinking water.

To provide 24×7 water supply to the town, a project to lift water from the Sutlej river was envisaged as part of which three water pumping stations were to be constructed at Shikroli, Dummi and Dwada villages. Under this project, the water will be lifted from Shikrodi village in Sunni. The project will improve Bulk Water Supply by pumping 67 MLD water from the Sutlej.
