In a significant step towards urban regulation, the Municipal Corporation of Mandi has issued 225 notices targeting illegal constructions within the city. The first round of hearings commenced on Friday at the Commissioner’s Court, marking the beginning of a crucial process aimed at addressing violations of local building regulations.

Compliance with the municipal laws

  • The court will operate 2 days a week with a goal of addressing 80 cases per month
  •  The Municipal Commissioner emphasised the importance of compliance with the municipal laws, which are governed by the Town and Country Planning rules.
  • He said many residents seem unaware of the legal frameworks guiding construction in the urban areas. Prior to hearings, the corporation ensures that individuals are informed about the specific violations they are accused of.

On the first day, the court heard 10 cases from the Purani Mandi area, setting the tone for what officials hope will be an effective resolution process. Municipal Commissioner HS Rana provided insights into the proceedings, highlighting that the court will operate two days a week. With a goal of addressing 80 cases per month, the authorities anticipate concluding these matters within two to two-and-a-half months.

The Municipal Commissioner emphasised the importance of compliance with the municipal laws, which are governed by the Town and Country Planning rules. He said many residents seem unaware of the legal frameworks guiding construction in the urban areas. Prior to hearings, the corporation ensures that individuals are informed about the specific violations they are accused of.

The Municipal Commissioner also highlighted that residents were taking these notices lightly, asserting that the laws were just as binding as criminal laws. He clarified that no political interference could halt these legal proceedings, reinforcing the impartiality of the enforcement process.

Initially, the corporation sent notices to approximately 306 individuals. However, following a review, only 225 cases involving illegal constructions predating the current Municipal Corporation will undergo hearings in the first phase. Subsequently, illegal constructions during the current MC’s tenure will be identified.

As the hearings progress, officials hope to foster a culture of compliance among the residents, ultimately contributing to the city’s sustainable growth and development.
