12 lives lost in 5 years, narrow bridge near Palampur a death trap
A narrow bridge on the Pathankot-Mandi national highway near Kalu Di Hatti, on the outskirts of Palampur town, has become a death trap. In the past five years, 12 lives have been lost here. The latest victim, a biker, suffered serious injuries after falling into the khud. Despite frequent accidents and prior warnings, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to take action.
The NHAI took over the highway in 2016 for its conversion into a four-lane road but has since neglected this stretch. Although this bridge is a critical link between Pathankot and major destinations like Mandi, Kullu-Manali, Leh, and Shimla, no steps have been taken to widen it or build a new one. Adding to the danger, the bridge lacks railings and has a narrow curve, making it a major accident-prone zone.
Constructed 130 years ago by the British, the bridge has never been replaced, despite a sharp increase in traffic. While the PWD upgraded the road to national highway standards in 2000, the bridge remained untouched. Sources indicate the delay is due to the highway’s ongoing four-lane upgrade, but locals believe safety should take priority. The lack of action by NHAI raises concerns, as this critical route continues to endanger lives daily.
